TURKEY TAIL
ANCIENT WISDOM

Turkey Tail
(Trametes versicolor)
It is one of the most revered medicinal mushrooms in the world, known for its striking, fan-like shape and vibrant, multicolored bands. Found growing on decaying logs in forests across North America, Europe, and Asia, this hardy fungus has been used in traditional medicine for centuries and is now gaining recognition in modern health and biohacking communities.
Turkey Tail is packed with bioactive compounds traditionally used for their powerful potential immune-modulating effects. In Japan, PSK is an approved adjunct therapy for cancer patients, highlighting Turkey Tail’s deep-rooted medical importance. Sadly (in our opinion), in the UK and EU it's merely classed as a novel food.
Rich in prebiotics, Turkey Tail may also nourish beneficial gut bacteria, promoting digestion and overall microbiome balance.
Today, Turkey Tail is being studied and rediscovered for its immune-boosting and healing properties, bringing ancient wisdom into the realm of modern science. This mystical mushroom continues to weave its legend across time—reminding us that nature’s oldest secrets are still waiting to be uncovered.

LEGEND & FOLKLORE
More than just a vibrant, fan-shaped fungus carpeting the forest floor—Turkey Tail has long been associated with mystical energy, spiritual balance, and even the ability to bridge the worlds of the living and the dead.
In ancient China, it was believed to be one of the fabled “Lingzhi” mushrooms—sacred fungi of immortality. Daoist monks brewed it into tonics, seeking a deep connection with nature’s forces. It was often included in potions crafted by imperial alchemists for emperors searching for eternal life.
In the damp, enchanted forests of Europe, Turkey Tail was regarded as a guardian fungus. Celtic druids and Slavic shamans saw it as a protector of the trees, growing wherever decay tried to take hold—restoring balance and renewing life.
For Native American tribes, Turkey Tail was a totem of endurance and connection to nature. Some tribes, inspired by its resemblance to the colorful feathers of wild turkeys, believed it carried the spirit of the bird.
SCIENCE INFORMATION REVIEW
TURKEY TAIL (CORIOLUS)
(Trametes versicolor)
Welcome to the Fung Shui turkey tail scientific research page which connects you to our ever evolving library of research and peer-reviewed papers. Where a reference is provided, you can find the corresponding number in the research references towards the bottom of the page in the 'peer reviewed papers & articles' section. This page is not medical advice. The UK has recently classed Turkey Tail as a 'novel food' and not suitable for human consumption because they didn't gather enough records of information for consumption prior to 1997.
IMMUNE SYSTEM
Turkey tail is historically used for its immunomodulatory effects, studies show this is potentially primarily attributed to its polysaccharopeptides, notably polysaccharide-K (PSK) and polysaccharopeptide (PSP). These compounds have been shown to stimulate the immune system by activating various immune cells, including T lymphocytes, macrophages, and natural killer (NK) cells, thereby potentially enhancing the body’s defense mechanisms against pathogens and diseases. [1]
ADJUNCTIVE ONCOLOGY
One of the most extensively studied applications of PSP and PSK from turkey tail is its role as a complementary treatment in uncontrolled cell growth in the Far East:
• Gastric: Clinical studies have indicated that PSK may improve survival rates in patients by modulating the immune system and inhibiting tumor metastasis. [2]
• Breast: Research suggests that turkey tail supplementation may enhance immune function in patients, potentially improving outcomes when used alongside conventional treatments. [1]
• Colorectal: PSK has demonstrated potential in prolonging survival and reducing chemotherapy-induced side effects in patients. [2]
Furthermore several randomized controlled trials confirm potential benefit for uncontrolled cell growth in the stomach, lung, oesophageal and cervix. Benefits reported also include increases in 2,5 and 15 year survival. [6][7]
GUT HEALTH & MICROBIOME
The prebiotic properties of turkey tail may well contribute to a healthy gut microbiome by potentially promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus. A balanced gut microbiome is essential for optimal digestion, nutrient absorption, and immune function. [3]
SKIN HEALTH
Turkey tail’s bioactive compounds have been studied for their potential to promote skin healing and protect against oxidative stress. In vitro research shows that its polysaccharopeptides may shield human skin cells from free radical-induced oxidative damage and inflammation. [12]
Turkey Tail extracts were indicated by one study to potentially significantly accelerate wound healing in hosts, increasing collagen formation, epidermal thickness, and fibroblast activity to speed up skin repair.[13]
By both neutralising oxidative stress and enhancing tissue regeneration, turkey tail mushrooms demonstrate potential benefits for skin health, from improving wound recovery to guarding against oxidative aging.
ANTIMICROBIAL
Turkey tail may exhibit broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity:
• Antibacterial: Extracts have shown potential to be effective against pathogens like Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, which are responsible for various infections. [4]
• Antifungal: Studies have shown possible efficacy against fungi such as Candida albicans, a common cause of yeast infections. [3]
RESPIRATORY HEALTH
Studies indicate that Turkey Tail may benefit respiratory infections and conditions through immune modulation. In animal models, its β-glucans enhanced antiviral immunity: hosts had reduced influenza virus in the lungs, less lung damage, and improved survival rates. [8]
Clinically, a polysaccharide peptide (PSP) from Turkey Tail given to patients with uncontrolled cell growth in their lungs improved their immune cell counts and slowed disease progression. [9]
These findings indicate that Turkey Tail may support lung health by bolstering the immune response against infections and improving outcomes in respiratory illnesses.
ENERGY & ENDURANCE
Turkey tail has been noted in studies to potentially combat fatigue and improve stamina. One study demonstrated that supplementing with Turkey Tail mycelial extract may increase muscular endurance and grip strength, while reducing fatigue biomarkers (lactate, ammonia) after exercise. [10]
In clinical settings, Turkey Tail is used as an adjunct therapy to counteract fatigue. Patients with uncontrolled cell growth taking turkey tail extract experienced less treatment-related tiredness and weakness, translating into better energy levels and improved quality of life during therapy.[11]
INFLAMMATION
Research indicates that turkey tail may exhibit notable abilities to support a balanced inflammatory response through immune regulation. Polysaccharopeptides from Turkey Tail (PSP and PSK) have demonstrated the ability to possibly reduce inflammation in various models.[11]
One study isolated a protein (YZP) from turkey tail that activated IL-10 producing regulatory B cells and suppressed pro-inflammatory cytokines, which significantly alleviated colon inflammation in an autoimmune colitis subject.[14]
This potential immunomodulatory action—boosting cytokines (known for their potential to support a balanced inflammatory response) and regulatory immune cells—suggests turkey tail may help manage chronic inflammation and autoimmune conditions.
ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY
Rich in antioxidants, including phenols and flavonoids, Turkey Tail may help combat oxidative stress by neutralizing free radicals. This activity is crucial in reducing inflammation and lowering the risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular ailments and certain uncontrolled cell growth situations. [5]
LIVER SUPPORT
Turkey tail mushrooms contain antioxidants and polysaccharides that may support liver function. Animal studies show that Trametes versicolor extracts may prevent toxin-induced liver damage by restoring glutathione levels and normalizing liver enzymes.[15]
Its polysaccharides have the potential to enhance the liver’s detoxification capacity by boosting antioxidant enzyme activity. [11]
These potential hepatoprotective effects, observed in studies and applied in traditional medicinal use, suggest Turkey Tail may help protect the liver from oxidative stress and improve its detoxifying abilities.
SUPPORT FOR PATIENTS UNDERGOING CHEMOTHERAPY
Turkey Tail has been associated with potentially mitigating some side effects of chemotherapy, such as nausea and loss of appetite, thereby improving patients’ quality of life during treatment. [2]
